Carl XVI Gustaf

The present king of Sweden, Carl XVI Gustaf

King of Sweden is a royal title usually claimed by the first-born son of the previous monarch (for female monarchs, see Queen of Sweden). The King of Sweden serves as head of state but has not been an absolute ruler since 1809 and completely lost all political power in 1975 with the introduction of new laws regarding monarchy by the Swedish government. However, all members of the royal family, including the King, are authorized diplomats and actively serve Swedish diplomatic interests abroad, especially by tightening the ties to fellow monarchies of the world. The present King of Sweden is Carl XVI Gustaf of House Bernadotte.
